Tethered to the One Who Never Moves

Last week, we talked about noticing what we are steeping in and how whatever holds our attention slowly shapes us. Remembering God’s goodness helps us turn our attention back to who He is.

But what happens when we are waiting and nothing seems to be changing?

In Psalm 40, David writes, “I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry.” The Hebrew word translated “waited patiently” is qavah. It means to wait with hope and expectation, and it carries the picture of being bound together like strands of a rope.

David did not simply wait. He waited for the Lord.

Think about a boat tied securely to a dock. The wind may blow, the water may rise, and the waves may move the boat in every direction. The rope does not stop the movement, but it keeps the boat connected to something secure.

Our lives can feel much the same way. We cannot always control the waves around us. We cannot hurry an answer, change another person, or make an uncertain situation resolve itself. But we can choose what we remain tethered to while we wait.

Remaining connected to God does not mean we will never become distracted, discouraged, or afraid. It means that when we notice ourselves drifting, we turn our attention back to Him. We remember who He is, tell Him what is happening within us, and trust that He is present even when we cannot yet see what He is doing.

This month, as we move from REMEMBER to REMAIN, consider asking yourself: What has been pulling my attention away from God? What would it look like to stay connected to Him in the middle of what I am waiting for?

We may not be able to control the waves, but we can remain tethered to the One who never moves.
